Guitar Tools is a free web app for learning the guitar fretboard. Nine exercises drill note and pitch recognition from different angles: reading a note across notations, finding a named note on the neck, naming a marked position, naming a chord shape, naming a note by ear alone, naming the distance between two notes by ear, naming the quality of a chord heard rather than seen, naming a note's place in a scale by ear, and naming a chord progression by ear. Five tunings are supported — standard, drop D, DADGAD, half step down, and seven-string — with both sharp and flat notation.
A statistics view tracks which notes and chords come up wrong most often and how long each answer takes, so practice can target the actual weak spots instead of guessing at them. An optional timed challenge turns any exercise into a scored run against the clock.
The app is built from ES modules, and browsers refuse to load those from
file:// — so opening index.html by double-clicking
it will always land here. Serve the folder over http instead:
cd path/to/guitar-tools python3 -m http.server 8000
Then open http://localhost:8000.
Any static server works: npx serve, php -S localhost:8000,
or a Live Server editor extension.
If you are already on http://, check that the server is
rooted at the folder containing index.html, and hard-reload
to clear a stale cached script.
